PEDOLOGY

The chemical-physical characteristics of the Rimini soil are very suitable for growing vines, and the spread of viticulture in this area proves this.
As far as the production of D.O.C. wines, on the hills and at the foot of the hills, we can define three main areas with quite uniform pedological characteristics.

Hills cultivated with vines in the inland, San Paolo - Rimini

First the area of central and upper Valmarecchia, mainly characterised by highly clayey soils; sub-alkaline pH, high levels of active limestone, especially along the right shore of the Marecchia river, but suitable for growing vines. The soils on the higher hills feature a low-medium level of organic content.
The middle-hill soils, in between the Marano and Conca Valleys, are generally middle composition, with high content in mud and sometimes clay, sub-alkaline pH with high levels of active limestone and a low level of organic content.
The soil of the inland, that of the Conca Valley highest hills, is characterized by a generally loosen texture with a high percentage of mud and especially on the foothills of clay, alkaline or sub-alkaline pH with a high limestone content, while a low content of organic substance.
Therefore the soil is very suitable for growing vines in all the above-mentioned areas. The best results in terms of quality are obtained in the soils of the medium and upper hills: lower average yields per hectare are offset by a higher alcoholic content and better organoleptic characteristics of the produced wines.
