   VARANO

It should be more correct to give to this variety a plural name "Varani" since you could find it with white, black and rosy berries. The one in the picture above is white, but I think it is also possible to find the other sub-varieties. De Bosis F. described it as one of the vines grown in the Rimini surroundings, in the Ampelographic Bulletins of the Province of 1879, it is said to be the same as Varano di Montiano and Terra del Sole, the black Cacciò di Fermo and Uva Grossa (large grapes) di Ancona.
Most probably it is a very old vine, also described by Trinci as "Vaiano" in 1738. This variety can also be found in Tuscany in Montepulciano commune and is in the genetic resources preservation fields among the minor Tuscany vines of the Viticulture Experimental Institute of Conegliano. It was mainly grown in the Verucchio area as a matter of fact there is a place at the foot of Rocca di Verucchio called "Le Coste del Varano" (The Varano Coasts).
Thanks to its large grapes it was also used as table grapes and from an oenological point of view good for blending. |
