   VERNACCIA

De Bosis F. described this vine in the Ampelographic Bulletins of the Province of 1879 as one of the varieties grown in the Rimini surroundings.
In the past it was grown in the whole Rimini area and was believed to produce an excellent wine. Many years ago, I had the change to taste a sweet wine, produced using exclusively that vine by a wine-grower and to be sincere it was a very interesting wine.
This vine was abandoned since it was very sensitive to oidium, thus requiring a very special attention. Today thanks to the products used to control oidium, the severe attacks of the past occur very seldom.
Vernaccia is a fruitful long-lived and strong variety that should be studied, through a pure wine-making process, to assess its oenological characteristics for possible niche products. |
