   VERNACCINA

This vine, also referred to as "Ribulina" in dialect, was widespread in the whole Rimini area. Probably this variety is the small Ribolla described by De Bosis F. in 1879 in the Ampelographic Bulletins of the Province as one of the vines grown in the Rimini surroundings. It was believed to be delicate since the grapes were easily spoiled; anyway this is not due to its delicate nature, but to growing ripe very early, about at the end of August. Consequently since in the rows this vine was mixed to other vines ripening normally, its grapes were harvested too late, already spoiled by an excessive ripening and by wasps and bees.
Old vine-growers believe it adds a good quality touch when blended. This variety has all the characteristics to be used unblended for a wine making test: it has small bunches like highly esteemed vines, is sufficiently fruitful and rustic and a very interesting ripening time. |
