VERUCCHIESE

It is also called Sangiovese Verucchiese (from Verucchio); in the past this red vine was grown pure in rows and vineyards. It was typical of the Rocca di Verucchio area and was not known elsewhere. It was often grown mixed with Sangiovese, so similar to it to be confused with that vine.
Still today vine-growers say the wine obtained from Verucchiese sold very well; farmers remember it as a wine to be drunk young, rotund and of a very good-quality. Verucchiese is a fruitful vine, that is easily rotten and grows ripe quite early: during the Santa Croce fair taking place in Verucchio on September 14th, the first young wines obtained by this vines were poured out. It is very similar to some five-lobe leaf Sangiovese biotypes to such an extent we wonder if in this vine we found some Sangiovese progenitors. To better appreciate its oenological characteristics its grapes should not be mixed in the wine making process, but used unblended. It is suitable for producing quality young and novello wines with specific characteristics linked to the territory. |
